Fourth Last 16 exit in six years - Mbappé and PSG come up short in Champions League again
All eyes were on one player at full time in the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, when Bayern Munich confirmed their spot in quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-0 (3-0) win over Paris Saint-Germain. However, nobody was interested in goalscorers Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry, Bayern star Jamal Musiala or even Lionel Messi. All attention had quickly turned to PSG star Kylian Mbappé. Arguably the world’s best footballer and once again the biggest victim of circumstance at the Parisian club in European football.
The result not only means that PSG are out of the Champions League in the first knock-out stage of the competition and that, like a number of his predecessors, head coach Christophe Galtier will be under immense pressure to justify his job at the club, but perhaps most importantly it also confirms that for the sixth season running the Ligue 1 giants were unable to provide Mbappé with the opportunity to win the greatest prize that domestic football has to offer stars of the sport. And that will unquestionably fuel new speculation over the striker’s future.
Fourth early exit in six seasons - Mbappé’s struggles in Europe rumble on
Of course, while the rumour mill won’t care about the finer details of Mbappé’s situation at PSG, it’s worth bearing in mind that the France international was perhaps the architect of his own demise in Munich on Wednesday night. Over the course of the game, the striker struggled to have any impact on the game at all and was unquestionably outshone by Bayern star Musiala, before goals from Choupo-Moting and then Gnabry stole the headlines in what should have been Mbappé’s night.

Unfortunately for the young striker, these disappointing nights in European football seem to be becoming more and more common for PSG and Mbappé. The result in Munich now means that over the course of the 24-year-old’s six seasons at the Parisian club, Mbappé & Co. have exited the Champions League at the Last 16 stage four times. Which is not good enough for a World Cup winner and goalscorer that clearly has ambitions of becoming the defining player of his generation. Whether he can ultimately do that with PSG remains to be seen, but if Wednesday’s performance is anything to go by, Mbappé may need to look elsewhere for a club that has serious credentials in European football.
